Corn Salad "d'Olanda a Seme Grosso" (Lamb's Lettuce, Mâche).
The leaves of this salad possess a delicate texture and aroma, an exquisite sweet-nutty flavour, and a slight tartness.
This variety forms elongated, stemmed, whole leaves gathered in a rosette. It is one of the main frost-resistant varieties of winter salads.

Benefits and Culinary Use:
Corn salad contains more iron than other salad types, as well as vitamins A, E, and B9 (promotes cell regeneration). It acts as a tonic and is considered an aphrodisiac.
It is delicious on its own or combined with other vegetables, meat, onions, citrus fruits, nuts, and olive oil.

Cultivation:
Sowing times:
1. Spring-Summer: April (as soon as the soil warms to +10°C) to mid-June. Germination takes 8–10 days. Harvest: August-October.
2. Winter sowing: August. Before frost, plants form a rosette of leaves. To prevent freezing, cover them with straw or spruce branches in autumn. Harvest: early spring.

Growing conditions:
* Temperature: Very cold-hardy (withstands frosts down to -15°C). Optimum growth at +18...+20°C.
* Watering: Moisture-loving. In hot, dry weather without water, leaves quickly become coarse.
* Spacing: Depth 1–2 cm. Distance: 35–45 cm between rows, 10–15 cm between plants.
* Fertilizing: Not recommended generally, as the plant accumulates nitrates (especially in shade or with fresh manure).

Important: Once flowering begins, Lamb's lettuce becomes unsuitable for consumption.
Grown under film/cover, the leaves are more tender. You can harvest until late autumn by cutting the outer leaves with a sharp knife.

Valerianella locusta Põldkännak Corn salad Vuonankaali Vintersallat Валерьянница Полевой салат

Bot. syn.: Valerianella olitoria (L.) Pollich.

* Corn salad (Lamb's lettuce) is sown in March-April and in August for autumn consumption, and in September for spring harvest. The leaves are used.
The plant is undemanding to the soil.
Corn salad has a high nutritional value. In terms of composition, it is more valuable than lettuce.
It is especially rich in vitamin C (40–58 mg per 100 g), which equates it to citrus fruits. It also contains carotene, vitamins B1, B2, and others.
Phosphorus, calcium, and iron are also present in the leaves of the plant.
Lamb's lettuce has a moderately calming effect, exerting a mild soothing influence on the nervous system.
It is especially useful in late spring. Due to the unpretentiousness of this culture, it is good to grow it even in those gardens
visited only on weekends.
Corn salad is used mainly fresh, but it can also be added to vegetable soups, mixed salads, or prepared as a salad on its own.
